TikTok, BGMI coming back to India?

TikTok has long been banned in India, but if sources are to be believed, the short-video app will return to India.

A couple of months ago, the TikTok-owned company Byetdance was in talks with a Mumbai-based company to reinstate TikTok in India. Now a CEO of a leading esports and gaming venture in India, Skyesports has confirmed that the short-video app is indeed coming back to India. To recall, TikTok, which had one of its largest user bases in India, was banned by the Indian government in 2020. Along with TikTok, 58 other apps were also banned due to national security reasons.

Skyesports CEO Shiva Nandy said that TikTok will return to India soon. “According to sources, Tik Tok is all set to make a comeback. In that case, BGMI will be 100% back. Hopefully, if everything goes well, there will be independence soon!” said Shiva Nandy, in a statement on his Instagram Stories. About the BGMI ban, Nandy said that it was not decided all of a sudden, the government had been contemplating the ban for almost 5 months.

“It was not an immediate action. It was in the process for almost five months. In fact, one week before removing the game from the Play Store, an interim notice was sent to Krafton HQ by the government. Two days before the game was removed from the store, we got a hint, and that is why most of the advance amount is to be paid for the Skyesports League, LAN Delhi,” Nandy said about the BGMI ban. He also stated that the BGMI would also be back soon. He stated that it was not a ban but an interim order.

So far neither Krafton nor the Indian government has confirmed the news of BGMI making a comeback in India.
Earlier in June , an ET report stated that Bytedance was in talks with the Hiranandani group to reinstate the video sharing platform in India.

Hirandandani group is one of the largest real estate developers in India with projects across Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai. The real estate giant also runs data centre operations under Yotta Infrastructure Solutions and has recently launched a technology-led consumer services arm-Tez Platforms. As per ET reports, the talks between the two companies is currently at an “exploratory stage”. The sources close to the publication have also stated that the government officials have been informed about the plans.“There have been no formal talks with us yet. But we have been informed of the plans. As and when they come to us for approval, we will examine their request,” a government official told ET.
